Trencadís technique

The best-known origins of trencadís take us back to the era of modernism. This technique of creating decorations with fragments of irregular ceramic tiles came, at that time, from the hand of the architect Antonio Gaudí.
Gaudí begins to decorate his works with this technique, using rescued, broken, unusable ceramics. He made use of glazed tiles with bright, smooth and decorated colors that, when combined with his volumetric architecture, obtained spectacular shimmering effects on contact with light.
At this time, the trencadís created ceramic compositions made directly on the support that was intended to decorate, breaking and manually placing each of the pieces, "tessera by tessera". This was the greatness of these mosaics , artistic creations very costly in time and with great waste of creativity, movement and life.
One can enjoy the beauty of trencadís technique with the works by Gaudí.
